Getting More Out of Your Time - Kansas City Apartment and Rental Advice for Apartment Owners and Managers

There are only 1,440 minutes in a day. That’s not a lot when you think about how much needs to be done. But, there are ways to make those minutes count and techniques you can put into play that can really shave time off everyday activities for the busy Kansas City apartment manager or private Kansas City property owner.

If saving a little time is what you have in mind, consider doing the following:

Cleaning up!

This is a big one. Think about how much time you spend looking for misplaced or lost files, notes and numbers. If you clean up and put a good organizational system to work for you, even the most mundane activities will go by faster. Why spend 10 minutes a day looking for lost files if you can spend 30 minutes one day organizing those files forever. Remember when a piece of paper comes across your desk to take action immediately. This means reading it, addressing it (if necessary), filing it or just plain tossing it out (if it’s warranted.)

Say goodbye to sticky notes

The organizational wonder of the 1990s is a thing of the past. Face it, sticky notes get lost. Instead, keep a single list of things to do and post it in the same place all the time. Whether it’s a legal pad on your desk or a running tally kept on the side of your computer, you’re less likely to lose this than 100 sticky notes.

Manage events

Take control of events as they happen. Plan your work and then work that plan to ensure things get done when they should and how they should.

Plan for interruptions

Anyone who plans every minute of the day down to the last second will find they have a lot of things left on the table at the end of the day. Build in extra time for every project to ensure life’s little interruptions don’t derail a good plan.

Finish what you start

List your day’s priorities and keep working on them one by one until they’re finished. This means tackling the most critical tasks first and not moving from one task to the next until you’re done with the first. Doubling back is a time waster.

Time is something we can never get back. There’s only so much in a day, so accomplishing what’s important should be the priority. By organizing, planning and putting that plan into action, however, you can shave time off normal tasks and make sure big jobs and the little ones, too, get done when they’re supposed to.
