Living In Vintage Spaces – Vintage Apartments and Lofts in Kansas City
Modern Kansas City apartments, condos and houses are ideal for some, but others prefer to live in places that have history. If you like the character, style and panache of older construction, you’re not alone. And, if you happen to be looking for a vintage apartment or home rental, the Kansas City metro area is the right place!
Kansas City is a veritable melting pot of construction. From ultra modern apartments and homes to vintage houses, lofts and complexes with lots of space and gingerbread, those in the market for a Kansas City apartment or rental will find the Kansas City metro area has it all.
If you haven’t lived in a vintage space before, however, there are some quirks you’ll want to consider first. Vintage construction is not like modern construction. In a lot of ways, it’s better – especially if you love an eye for detail – but there are some “modern conveniences” that might be missing from the vintage Kansas City apartment and home rentals you look at.
Many of the vintage home and apartment rentals found on the Kansas City market are those from the 1920s. This was the great era of urbanization in Kansas City, and inasmuch, many apartment buildings and homes were built right within the major cities in the United States, including Kansas City. These living spaces ranged, just like their modern counterparts, from cozy to quite expansive.
It is many of these places that you will likely run into as you look for a vintage rental to call your own. Before you go looking, however, be prepared to deal with a few quirks, or what vintage home lovers prefer to call old-time charms.
Vintage Kansas City rental spaces tend to have a few things that set them apart from other rentals. These are not always present, but be prepared for them. And, remember, many property owners do not wish to tamper with the historic nature of their apartments or homes, so they have not updated certain things on purpose.
The common quirks of Kansa City vintage apartments and rentals include:
- No central heat or air. This can easily be overcome with window air conditioning units. As you look, remember the landlords aren’t “cheap,” adding central units can seriously alter the historic construction. Also keep in mind that many of the vintage rentals in Kansas City were built to take advantage of natural heating and cooling, especially cooling. With correct sun exposures, thick walls and other features, they’re meant to help hold in hot or cold air to assist in keeping occupants comfortable.
- Lower water pressure. This can be caused by the building’s plumbing or even municipal pipes that are incapable of handling the demands of residents. It’s not an easy problem to overcome per say, but it’s one you can learn to cope with by employing strategic measures, such as not running a dishwasher while taking a shower.
- Unusual construction. Many of the vintage apartment and home rentals in Kansas City will have such things as block or plaster walls, uniquely shaped rooms and other idiosyncrasies that might seem “different” to some, but for others, they add to the charm.
Remember as you look for vintage apartment and home rentals in Kansas City, these old homes and buildings might not be “perfect” by today’s standards, but they are ideal for those who like to live in places that have a little history behind them. If historical construction appeal, do be prepared for the quirks, but expect some wonderful features, as well.
