Depending on the apartment or rental you find you will need to count on paying the community or landlord, money in two stages when you:
- Submit an application with your security deposit
- Sign the lease.
When you submit an application for your new apartment, you most likely need a check or money order for:
- Application Fee: This is a combined credit check and rental check. Many of the communities also run criminal background checks within this fee as well.
- Security Deposit: Security deposits are left at the time you agree to rent the unit or rental from the community or landlord. This commonly is accompanied with the Application Fee.
Signing the lease: When you sign the lease, you will pay the landlord:
- First month's rent or a prorated rent depending on move in date.
- On occasion last month's rent. This is less common, but typically private landlords or small community owners require it.
To play it safe, consider saving up twice the amount of the expected cost. So, if your apartment is going to cost 500.00 per month try saving up 1,000.00. If the cost ends up being more than that, at least you have the bulk of the cost covered. If it is less, then that is extra money you can save towards the move. Most all communities/landlords require rent payments and security deposit be paid with certified checks, money orders, personal check or sometimes allow credit cards.
