Kansas City Chiefs Football - Chiefs Football Rocks Kansas City
Ask a Kansas City football fan what color they bleed and you’re likely to get the answer red and gold. When it comes to bone-crunching gridiron action, Kansas City is the place to be. Serving as home to the famous Chiefs for more than four decades, the city has been called home by some of the biggest stars in NFL history.
Playing out of Arrowhead Stadium since August 1972, the team’s roots go back a little further into Kansas City’s history. The former Dallas Texans made their way to Kansas City in 1963 while owned by AFL legend Lamar Hunt. The team needed a new home as the NFL’s Cowboys and the AFL’s Texans found that Dallas simply wasn’t big enough to support them both.
Hunt made the decision to move, and began seeking out new places to play. With Kansas City’s mayor, H. Roe Bartle, supporting the idea of bringing football action to town, the team pulled up stakes and has been writing its history out of Kansas City ever since.
About a decade after their arrival in Kansas City, the Chiefs found themselves a new home in Arrowhead Stadium. The stadium, the pride of Kansas City, has seen such legends as Derrick Thomas and Buck Buchanan play on its field.
The Chiefs are now as much a part of Kansas City’s landscape as jazz music, fountains and gardens. With an estimated 80,000 spectators filling the stands on any given game day, the Chiefs have earned the record of having one of the best home win percentages in the NFL. The team is also celebrated as having one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, courtesy of its loyal fans.
So beloved are the Chiefs, in fact, voters of Jackson County agreed in 2006 to fund a $325 million renovation project on Arrowhead. The stadium will receive a massive facelift thanks to the added sales tax. On the table for completion by 2010 are such things as wider concourses, more concession stands and restrooms, a new club and even a Chiefs store and museum.
The stadium is located just off Interstate 70 at Blue Ridge. In addition to Chiefs games, it also plays host to a number of other events throughout the year, but during football season, it’s all red and gold.
