Relocating to a new state can be a daunting experience, especially for those with young children. Not only do you have to acclimate the youngsters to new surroundings, but you also have to plant new roots for them educationally. This means finding the right school for them and getting them enrolled. A fear of the unknown can make this particular step very unsettling for both you and your children.
Fortunately, you will soon find (if you haven’t already) that the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area is home to many school districts that have earned numerous accolades on both the state and national levels. Some districts, in fact, have even been honored by Newsweek magazine, the U.S. Department of Education and more.
To make getting settled a bit easier, we’ve put together some basic information on what the schools within the states of Missouri and Kansas will require from you in order to enroll your youngsters in public schools. These are generalized criteria and may vary from district to district, or school to school.
Let’s take a look at the Missouri requirements first. They are:
- Entering kindergartners must be age 5 before August 1 of the current school year. There are some exceptions to this rule, but this is the general guideline recognized in Missouri.
- Students wishing to enroll must have up to date immunization records. Your pediatrician should be able to help you with this. Check with your doctor in your former home if you haven’t found a doctor in the Kansas City area as of yet.
- The correct Social Security number for each child you wish to enroll. If you don’t have these, you can easily obtain them from the Social Security Administration. You will need your child(s) birth certificate(s).
- Speaking of birth certificates, you’ll need these, too!
- Proof of residency. Proof is generally anything as simple as a utility bill in your name or a lease agreement that’s been signed.
- Previous school records will also be helpful to have along to assist in placement.
- Certified transcripts may also be required.
Kansas’ requirements are also very similar, but there are some variations. Let’s take a look at them:
- Those entering kindergarten must turn 5 on or before the start of the current school year to enroll.
- A certified state copy of a birth certificate is required.
- Immunization records must be provided, and up to date.
- A Social Security number for each child you wish to enroll must be provided.
- A physical exam.
- School records from previous schools should be brought to registration.
- Certified transcripts from previous schools may also be required.
For specific requirements, contact the school(s) you wish to enroll your child in. There may be registration fees required along with enrollment, as well.
