Kansas City Schools Help Keep The Community Strong

It’s a simple fact a good community cannot stay that way unless it offers a strong educational system for students from preschool to graduate school and beyond. When it comes to ensuring its future generations are well educated, Kansas City schools are known for stepping up to the plate.

With a number of public school systems serving the multi-county Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, plus a host of colleges, universities and trade schools, students in the area are set from kindergarten through grad school when it comes to educational opportunities. Add to the educational landscape the number of outreach programs offered by such organizations as the Kansas City Ballet and area museums and it’s clear this area takes the education of its youngsters serious.

The metro area itself is served by more than two dozen different school districts including Blue Springs, Kansas City, Independence, Olathe, Oak Grove and the Shawnee Mission School District. Each district varies in its own unique offerings, but all have a few things in common. Whether it’s an inner city district or one that serves mainly the suburbs, the schools in the Kansas City area all receive a lot of support from the community as a whole.

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, for example, has formed a strong partnership with many local school districts to ensure students have the tools necessary to succeed while they learn and to excel in the future. The group sponsors a number of programs, including Achievement First, that give students incentives for solid performance in their educational pursuits. The business community’s involvement in the schools is consistently strong from district to district as most chambers of commerce feel a good educational system is vital for the business community’s survival as well.

A sampling of the public educational system in the metro area can be found in the Kansas City School District where school choice is offered to parents and the district also provides a number of specialized programs including magnet schools, comprehensive schools and more. This elaborate network of schools enables families to choose the best schools for their students. In the case of magnet schools, pupils with differing strengths and talents are given the opportunity to sharpen those skills while also concentrating on the basics they’ll need to excel in the future. Magnet schools include those for foreign languages and the arts.

Another sampling of Kansas City area schools lies in the Shawnee Mission district where in the 2004-05 school year the district brought home a number of awards. This Kansas school district was home to 38 national merit finalists, 132 advanced placement scholars and 25 Kansas Governor’s Scholars. Offering a lot of similar programs to those in Kansas City, Mo., this district also provides Internet courses to assist parents who wish to home school their elementary and secondary education students.

Once students in any one of the metro area’s public schools complete their education, they don’t have to travel far to find institutes of higher learning. The Kansas City area is home to a number of colleges and universities including the University of Missouri, Metropolitan Community College, Rockhurst University and more. Also included in the educational system in this area are a number of technical and career training institutes. Devry has a campus in the area along with the Cleveland Chiropractic College, the Kansas City Art Institute and more.

Whatever a student’s eventual career goal, the Greater Kansas City area has a school to match. From renowned journalism schools to medical school and beyond, Kansas City is almost as well known for its advanced educational opportunities as it is for its barbecue and jazz.

For a metropolitan area to thrive and grow, it must offer educational opportunities for its residents. The Kansas City area does this through a strong network of public and private schools for primary and secondary education. Advanced learning is not forgotten either with everything from specialized technical schools to colleges and universities right in the city’s backyard, making Kansas City a destination for education.
