The University Of Missouri - UMKC of Kansas City Strives For Excellence

An urban area without outstanding institutions of higher learning is destined for failure. That’s the thought that helped create the school that would one day become the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Founded during the peak of the Great Depression in 1933, the University of Kansas City was a vision of the community’s foresighted leaders who saw a need to meet the educational demands of citizens who wanted to strive for something more out of life. The school grew and thrived for 30 years, slowly adding on to its areas of educational focus, until in 1963 it officially joined the University of Missouri as the Kansas City campus.

Today the school is one of four campuses in the state university system and serves thousands of students from all over the world annually through a variety of programs. Its mission encompasses a broad vision for the future that includes having its students and faculty lead in the health sciences industry, expand the visual and performing arts and assist in creating a professional workforce that will do Kansas City and America proud. UMKC strives for educational excellence, offering its students two campuses within the Greater Kansas City Metro Area – the Volker Campus and the Hospital Hill Campus.

Offering programs that cover almost every area of learning imaginable, students at UMKC can earn bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees through this homegrown school. Academic divisions range from arts and sciences and business and public administration to medical, law and education. The campus is even home to a conservatory of music and a school of dentistry.
While academics is the mainstay at UMKC, athletics are not forgotten at this institution. The UMKC Kangaroos are known for their prowess in such sports as track and field, basketball, softball, soccer and golf.
